What Are Optoelectronics?

Optoelectronics refers to the branch of electronics that involves devices and systems designed to source, detect, and control light. These components bridge the gap between optics (light) and electronics, converting electrical signals into optical signals or vice versa. Common materials used in optoelectronic devices include semiconductors such as silicon, gallium arsenide, and indium phosphide.

Key Optoelectronic Components:

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs): Devices that emit light when an electric current flows through them.

Laser diodes: Produce coherent and intense light used in communication and precision tools.

Photodiodes: Sensors that detect light and convert it into an electrical signal.
